Description

The Great Impersonation

by Edward Phillips Oppenheim

Excerpt:

The trouble from which great events were to come began when Everard Dominey, who had been fighting his way through the scrub for the last three quarters of an hour towards those thin, spiral wisps of smoke, urged his pony to a last despairing effort and came crashing through the great oleander shrub to pitch forward on his head in the little clearing. It developed the next morning, when he found himself for the first time for many months on the truckle bed, between linen sheets, with a cool, bamboo-twisted roof between him and the relentless sun. He raised himself a little in the bed.

"Where the mischief am I?" he demanded.

About Oppenheim:

Edward Phillips Oppenheim (October 22, 1866 – February 3, 1946), was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successfulwriter of genre fiction including thrillers. Featured on the coverof Time magazine on September 12, 1927, he was the self-styled"prince of storytellers." He composed some one hundred and fiftynovels, mainly of the suspense and international intrigue nature, but including romances, comedies, and parables of everyday life. Hewas the earliest writer of spy fiction as understood today, andinvented the "Rogue Male" school of adventure thrillers that waslater exploited by John Buchan and Geoffrey Household. Undoubtedlyhis most renowned work was The Great Impersonation: it was filmedthrice, the last time as a strong piece of wartime propaganda.Perhaps Oppenheim's most enduring creation is the character ofGeneral Besserley, the protagonist of General Besserley's PuzzleBox and General Besserley's New Puzzle Box (one of his last works).Much of Oppenheim's work possesses a unique escapist charm, featuring protagonists who delight in Epicurean meals, surroundingsof intense luxury, and the relaxed pursuit of criminal practice, oneither side of the law.
